Our recent update changed the order of loading the conflicted Newtonsoft.Json.dll that was causing the error reported above: we now load our version of that library first. I suspect, if you have updated to the latest RhinoWIP, you are experiencing a different problem.
It is possible that you might not have actually deleted this folder. I would suggest you double-check. If this folder is not present, the next time you launch Rhino for Mac, it will ask you for your password again so it can create the folder and write the license information there.
I just had to re-install my main computer. I have an Ignite Pro 5 licence that I used to use a lot with Vegas Pro (since it used to be bundled with Vegas Pro), but it is now discontinued. I used to be able to re-install it, but apparently the activation service has been removed. They provide a link to get a licence file online, but that link doesn’t work anymore.However, I still have it installed an activated on my second computer.
I just tried to login to FXHome, and no matter what browser I use, I can’t. When I upgraded to Win 11 from Win 10, I did a fresh install of Win 11 on a new NVME, keeping the Win10 as a backup drive. I slowly migrated everything over to Win11, including Vegas and installing Ignite Pro 5. I was asked to deactivate it from the Win 10 computer and activate it on Win 11. It was successful, but I did this a while ago.
I was able to log into my FXHome account and see my activations, serial numbers and products bought. It seems ever since Arlist took over, all the people behind FXHome are now gone, the forum is gone, you can’t post on their FB page…
What I mean is that I started using HiFilm Pro/Ignite Pro because they were bundled with Vegas. As for version 5 precisely, I may have purchased the upgrade directly from them.I tried to login to their site, though I would ask their “community”, but after navigating between sub-domains, I was logged off and can’t login anymore. I used their contact form, but I doubt they will have an answer. (Though they still have all the old versions installation files on some “legacy” page.)And, by the way, I try not to use these plugs-ins in new projects (the “new” colour grading in Vegas helps with this) but I had a lot of past projects using these.

Because if you contact the new owners, Artlist, on the matter, they are most likely gonna tell you that you need to purchase their latest version of Ignite Pro, which is now called Artlist Plugins and is a bundled monthly subscription payment plan.

On one hand, I would really want to spend money on this right now, on the other hand, I would think it’s fine to purchase an upgrade after all this time … but I would only be interested if: they are backward compatible with my past projects + they are not super overpriced + the could actually be purchase as a one-time purchase and not a subscription…
I launched the Ignite Pro activator again, I did not actually have to use the local license file, and I had to “unregister” one of my previous computers/installation… So the activation service is likely working and they are still maintaining stuff there.
The link that @Steve_Rhoden provided says they have 40+ plugins without giving any information on what they are and what they can do. With Ignite Pro 5, there are 19 folders. I also wonder if they still include Mocha HF, Foundry tracking, and Boris BCC 3D.
I thought that the first two (Mocha HF and Foundry) were HitFilm Pro inclusions – I’ve not ever seen them in Ignite Pro. BCC 3D may have been a ‘bonus’ extra with HitFilm Pro at some time, but I’ve not seen it as an extra with Ignite Pro. But if it were it would have been useless because I’ve already got BCC (complete).

Plugin Packs is the former name for Monitoring Connectors. They refer to the same thing. They contain templates that set default value in the macros contained in the commands. These commands execute the plugins in the /usr/lib/centreon/plugins/ folder (but not only this scripts).
The Github repo can be cloned and used for monitoring but this is more suitable for develoment purpose that for production. You can either use the github repo or the packaged plugins on an unlicensed centreon by installing the plugins from our packages repositories (added by default on Centreon servers). You will then have to manually create your commands and your templates and/or hosts.

In the web interface, check that you have selected automatic installation of plugins in the top right-hand corner of Configuration > Monitoring Connectors Manager.Then, once you export your configuration, if at least one host or service requires the plugin, it will be installed automatically.This requires the central/poller to have access to internet or to a local mirror of our repository.
To make the plugin checks work, you need to have the plugin package and then either deploy the services using the monitoring connectors if you have a licence, or create the commands and services associated with the plugin yourself.

The crossing of the Sun into a Rashi is called a Sankramana. When the Sun moves into Mesha Rashi, the Mesha Sankramana, marks the beginning of a Solar Varsha (SauramANa YugAdhi). This Sankramana occurs on 13 or 14 th of April every year and is the date of the Nirayanam / Tropical Spring Equinox . Spring heralds the season of new beginnings, therefore the New Year is fixed for this season. Starting from April 14th, the Sun moves through each Rashi marking one solar month till Meena Rashi, marking the completion of one solar year in 365 days.
(The Tropical March equinox marks when the Northern Hemisphere starts to tilt toward the sun, which means longer, sunnier days. In the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox is called the vernal equinox, because it signals the beginning of spring (vernal means fresh or new like the spring). The September equinox is called the autumnal equinox, because it marks the first day of fall /autumn.
In the Amanta system, the lunar month in which the Mesha Sankramana occurs is designated the first lunar month, Chaitra mAsah. And the first day of the Shukla paksha of Chaitra mAsah is designated as the first day of the Lunar New Year (ChAndramANa Yugadhi). It preceeds the SauramANa Yugadhi, but due to the difference in days between solar and lunar years, the date of the ChAndramANa Yugadhi changes year on year. For this reason, SouramANa Samvatsara is referred to as the Sthirasamvatsara and ChandramANa Samvatsara as Asthira Samvatsara.
The solar month of Mesha overlaps with its lunar month Vaisakha, in Hindu lunisolar calendars. Regional calendars used in the Indian subcontinent have two aspects: lunar and solar. Lunar months begin with Chaitra and solar months start with Vaisakha Sankranti.
In regions such as Maharashtra which begin the official new year with the commencement of the lunar year, the solar year is marked by celebrating Vaisakha Sankranti. Conversely, regions starting the new year with Vaisakha Sankranti, give prominence to the start of the lunar year in Chaitra.
We know that it is rare to see a month long gap between the Pitr Paksha and Navratri as we have seen in this year, 2020. And this change in time also happens with Diwali and other festivals in some other years. So, let us see the reason behind these changes.
.In the luni-solar hindu calendar, while the length of a sidereal (12 months ) solar year is 365.25 days, the twelve lunar māsa add up to around 354 days, approximately 11 days short of a solar year. We are familiar with the leap year concept of the Gregorian calendar. Similarly, the lunar deficit of 11 days in the Indian calendar is offset approximately every 32.5 months / 2.7 years (32 months, 16 days and 8 ghadis to be precise), by repeating a month which is declared an Adhika Masa(extra month) and labelled with the same name as the lunar month succeeding it. Eg: This year the Adhika mAsah is called Adhika Ashwin and the following month will be Shuddh Aswin. The choice of this month is not random, but timed to sync back the Lunar calendar to the cycle of the seasons.
In practice, every lunar month witnesses only one sankramana. If a lunar month does not witness a sankramana (i.e. which starts and ends while the sun is traversing a single sign of the Zodiac then this month without transit is labelled the Adhika Masa and labeled with the same name as the lunar month succeeding it. Such a year has thirteen lunar months. This effectively synchronizes the lunar calendar with the solar calendar and ensures that a Mesha Sankramana happens in the following Chaitra masa.
The Hindu calendars adjust the mismatch in divasa and tithi, using a methodology similar to the solar and lunar months. Adhika māsa (month) is the first of two whereas an adhika tithi is the second of two.
Repeating a month causes a few problems like scheduling festivals, weddings or harvests. Assume we repeat a month say, June in a particular year. There would be confusion on which June to celebrate a birthday in or how to invite people for a wedding if both months are called June ! This issue is resolved in the Panchanga by declaring the first month as Shudha (pure, clean, regular, proper, also called Deva month) and the repeated month as Mala or Adhika (extra, unclean and inauspicious, also called Asura masa).
While some call this mAsah MalA / unclean, others consider it very auspicious. Either way, prayer, fasting, charity and purification rites are recommended for this month. Named after Lord Vishnu, the month is also called Purushottama mAsa and is dedicated to His worship.
The Hindu mathematicians who calculated the best way to adjust the lunar and solar years, over long periods of a yuga (era, tables calculating 1000s of years), determined that the best means to intercalate/ insert into the calendar the extra intercalary months was a 19-year cycle( the laghada yuga). This
Intercalation is generally adopted in the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 19th year of this cycle. Further, the complex rules rule out the repetition of Mārgasirsa, Pausha and Maagha lunar months. The historic Hindu texts are not consistent on these rules, with competing ideas flourishing in the Hindu culture.
The Hindu calendar makes further rare adjustments, over a cycle of centuries, where a certain month is considered kshaya month (dropped). This, for example, happened in the year 1 BCE, when there was no new moon between Makara samkranti and Kumbha samkranti, and the month of Pausha was dropped.
Nepali Calendar : Nepali calendar also called nepali patro is a traditional luni-solar calendar used in Nepal for cultural and religious purposes. Known as the Bikram Sambat Calendar, it is based on the hindu calendar system and serves as the official calendar of Nepal. The Nepali Calendar consists of 12 months, each with a varying number of days, changing from year to year, and ranging from 29 days to 32 days.
One of the unique features of the Nepali Calendar is that it is 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar. The Nepali Calendar follows a detailed Nepali panchang to list important festivals like Dashain, Tihar, Teej, Chhath, Lhosar, and Eid. Nepali Calendar also known as Nepali Patro is the Bikram Sambat system which uses lunar months and solar sidereal year. The Nepalese new year falls on 1st Baishakh (mid of April). The months have a minimum of 28 (usually Mangshir/Poush) days and a maximum of 32 (usually Asar/Shrawan) days. Besides Nepal and India, Bikram Sambat Nepali Calendar is also used in other countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
King Chandragupta Vikramaditya, who was the Hindu king of Ujjain (currently in Rajasthan, India), started a new calendar and gave it his own name, Vikram. ‘Sambat’, which means ‘era’ in English, is used for any calendar system in Sanskrit. Thus, the calendar was named Vikram Sambat. With the development of the relationship between Vikramaditya and the Lichchhavi kings of Nepal through marriage, the calendar system was introduced to Nepal. Since then, it was used in Nepal by subsequent generations of kings for various purposes until it was replaced by Sakha Sambat during the Rana regime. However, the Ranas restored the Vikram Sambat Calendar in 1958, and since then, it has been used and known as the official Nepali Calendar.
It is also believed that around 58 BC, when the Vikram Sambat Calendar was started, there was no existence of King Chandragupta Vikramaditya in India. Therefore, the calendar may have been started and solely developed by the Lichchhavi kings of Nepal. This suggests that it was Mandev, the then king of Nepal, who started the Nepali Calendar.

(Just look at the marine electronics industry to see the havoc that short product cycles and the pressure to constantly bring out something new wreaks.)
In addition, because the two operating systems are completely separate and only one is running at a given time, the other programs that we run on the computer under Mac OS can not possibly interfere or crash the navigation system.
This is in keeping with our thinking that navigation computers should be kept totally clean with no software installed that is not absolutely required to execute their primary function.
While I have not done an in-depth comparison of power usage, Apple have long been leaders in wringing maximum performance out of minimum watts. This is not just guesswork, since we are often running as many as three Macbooks (two Pros and an Air) on the boat doing AAC work, and the reduction in amp hours used over a day after we switched back from Windows machines was substantial.
The flip side of a clean Windows install is that we must do it ourselves. This is reasonably complex with quite a few steps. On the bright side, Apple has good documentation on the process and in addition you can call their support line, which is several cuts above that of most manufacturers, for help.
Obviously, if you are not a Mac user, this is not an option open to you and you will be faced with buying two Airs, but then if you are really going to have a hot spare, that will be the case no matter what computer you select.

I was disappointed with the build quality for the price. From day 1 it creaked and groaned due to flex in the casing, within a month I was inside the thing after having figured out, and bought the special pentalobe screw driver to remove the rear cover. Bearing in mind I work on a ship and an Apple genius is not just around the corner. I fixed the creaking and groaning with an insulation tape gasket under the rear cover.
Good point. Also, I would never buy an older PC or a refurbished one for a mission critical application like Navigation. Just not worth the extra risk and aggravation for the price difference, at least to me. For example, as we both know, solid state memory, both RAM and SSD actually wear out with use, so I want to start with new.
We just kind of drifted into Maxsea via a business relationship we have with CMAP who used to own Nobeltec, so I have never done an evaluation of Maxsea against other options and probably never will since TimeZero seems to work well for us and I would rather go cruising and write about seamanship issues like docking and anchoring than evaluate software.
Sorry, after a working lifetime in high-tech, cutting edge marine electronics are just not my thing, particularly since most of this new stuff is seriously unreliable and much of it down right dangerous.
On ports. Every time Apple strips something the market has a melt down. Remember the hysteria when the stopped putting optical disk drives in their computers? But usually a year or so later stripping such stuff proves to be nothing but innovative forward thinking that makes their products better.
Also, in the comments to an earlier post I did on nav system interfaces the consensus was, if memory serves, that touch screens just did not work that well for navigation. I know I have tried it on a ipad and simply hated it, just not precise enough, at least for me.
John, Thank you for an informative and timely post. We are about to replace our HP laptop (similar concerns re age, etc.) and have been toying with an Air or Pro, or other Windows machine as that is what we have used extensively. We have two Garmin chartplotter said on board, as well as an iPad and two iPhones, all with Garmin BlueChart. We like the consistency of the charting. We have used Open CPN on our laptop for back up and coffee table planning, but not cruising. The laptop (whatever we get) will be backup. I assume, from your original description, that the MacBook Pro can be configured as you have the Air? We are leaning to a Pro because we use the laptop as an entertainment center on board. Thoughts? One problem with the Macs and many new laptops is that they are difficult to fix. Replacing the battery on my laptops is simple. Replacing the hard drive or accessing memory on either is a five minute task.
Disadvantages:* non-waterproof components, so more suited to a larger boat (or a location on a boat) where water is less likely to splash in (though one perhaps could find a waterproof display and mouse and put them in a wet location, connected via USB to a dry-located computer)* requires technical knowledge, skills and time, to buy, configure and install* no technical support number to call, so needs to be setup and tested before you leave
I just bought a factory refurbished Leveno X1 Carbon laptop with a SSD for $250. It came with a separate ThinkPad mini docking station that allows me to plug in multiple accessories like keyboards and large screens and disconnect and remove the laptop with a single plug.
I follow your arguments for running Windows on a Mac, having been doing this for years. It works perfect. What I dont follow you in, are the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. When I upgraded to the Maxsea Navigator V3., I first installed it on the backup laptop, and made a big mistake upgrading to Windows 10 at the same time.Luckily I didnt do that on the navigation computer on board, and it showed up there was no need. Maxsea V3. runs just perfect on our stationary computer running Windows 7.
Since security update on are of concern, Im guessing youre having Internet connection on your primary navigation computer. Well, we dont do that. Everything is downloaded and checked on an other laptop before the gribfile is transferred to the navigation computer via memory stick. This way were not in danger of getting any malware infection, and we dont need to run any kind of update, regarding firewall, antivirus or OS.
The two biggest things for me were overall screen brightness and ability to find reliable direct 12v DC charging solutions. The newer USB-C MacBook and especially the Pro (higher screen brightness) won the battle. I find black text on a white background readable in most direct or partial sun situations. Note, the versions without the touch bar have a more efficient CPUs.
Sounds like a good system and interesting about the speed comparison of Maxsea. I agree, in that it does not run that much faster on a fully tricked out Macbook Pro than the Air. That said, I would not go too far down the graphics power curve in case the computer got overwhelmed at just the wrong moment. For example I have noticed that TimeZero can get a little hesitant if adding a complex new route while navigating. Given that, the spec of the Air above is as low as I would want to go.
Also, in recent years I have had no problems with USB hubs, at least as long as they are externally powered and so I regard that as a solved problem. Also W10 seems a lot better at connecting and staying connected to USB devices than 7 was.
We are in the Strait of Belle Isle and so I have had internet, but we are now heading out of cell phone coverage again, probably for a week or so, so I will not be present in the comments for a while.
I replaced my ancient laptop earlier this year with a smart new Windows 10 HP reversible touchscreen laptop. I run Seapro for charting and AIS. My thought was that I would use it in tablet mode to be more compact.
As to the Windows 10 lock down problem, I would go with the solution Henric and I both use which is to not connect it to the internet much. I just had to re-install my main computer. I have an Ignite Pro 5 licence that I used to use a lot with Vegas Pro (since it used to be bundled with Vegas Pro), but it is now discontinued. I used to be able to re-install it, but apparently the activation service has been removed. They provide a link to get a licence file online, but that link doesn’t work anymore.However, I still have it installed an activated on my second computer.
I just tried to login to FXHome, and no matter what browser I use, I can’t. When I upgraded to Win 11 from Win 10, I did a fresh install of Win 11 on a new NVME, keeping the Win10 as a backup drive. I slowly migrated everything over to Win11, including Vegas and installing Ignite Pro 5. I was asked to deactivate it from the Win 10 computer and activate it on Win 11. It was successful, but I did this a while ago.
I was able to log into my FXHome account and see my activations, serial numbers and products bought. It seems ever since Arlist took over, all the people behind FXHome are now gone, the forum is gone, you can’t post on their FB page…
What I mean is that I started using HiFilm Pro/Ignite Pro because they were bundled with Vegas. As for version 5 precisely, I may have purchased the upgrade directly from them.I tried to login to their site, though I would ask their “community”, but after navigating between sub-domains, I was logged off and can’t login anymore. I used their contact form, but I doubt they will have an answer. (Though they still have all the old versions installation files on some “legacy” page.)And, by the way, I try not to use these plugs-ins in new projects (the “new” colour grading in Vegas helps with this) but I had a lot of past projects using these.

Because if you contact the new owners, Artlist, on the matter, they are most likely gonna tell you that you need to purchase their latest version of Ignite Pro, which is now called Artlist Plugins and is a bundled monthly subscription payment plan.

On one hand, I would really want to spend money on this right now, on the other hand, I would think it’s fine to purchase an upgrade after all this time … but I would only be interested if: they are backward compatible with my past projects + they are not super overpriced + the could actually be purchase as a one-time purchase and not a subscription…
I launched the Ignite Pro activator again, I did not actually have to use the local license file, and I had to “unregister” one of my previous computers/installation… So the activation service is likely working and they are still maintaining stuff there.
The link that @Steve_Rhoden provided says they have 40+ plugins without giving any information on what they are and what they can do. With Ignite Pro 5, there are 19 folders. I also wonder if they still include Mocha HF, Foundry tracking, and Boris BCC 3D.
I thought that the first two (Mocha HF and Foundry) were HitFilm Pro inclusions – I’ve not ever seen them in Ignite Pro. BCC 3D may have been a ‘bonus’ extra with HitFilm Pro at some time, but I’ve not seen it as an extra with Ignite Pro. But if it were it would have been useless because I’ve already got BCC (complete).

Plugin Packs is the former name for Monitoring Connectors. They refer to the same thing. They contain templates that set default value in the macros contained in the commands. These commands execute the plugins in the /usr/lib/centreon/plugins/ folder (but not only this scripts).
The Github repo can be cloned and used for monitoring but this is more suitable for develoment purpose that for production. You can either use the github repo or the packaged plugins on an unlicensed centreon by installing the plugins from our packages repositories (added by default on Centreon servers). You will then have to manually create your commands and your templates and/or hosts.

In the web interface, check that you have selected automatic installation of plugins in the top right-hand corner of Configuration > Monitoring Connectors Manager.Then, once you export your configuration, if at least one host or service requires the plugin, it will be installed automatically.This requires the central/poller to have access to internet or to a local mirror of our repository.
To make the plugin checks work, you need to have the plugin package and then either deploy the services using the monitoring connectors if you have a licence, or create the commands and services associated with the plugin yourself.

The crossing of the Sun into a Rashi is called a Sankramana. When the Sun moves into Mesha Rashi, the Mesha Sankramana, marks the beginning of a Solar Varsha (SauramANa YugAdhi). This Sankramana occurs on 13 or 14 th of April every year and is the date of the Nirayanam / Tropical Spring Equinox . Spring heralds the season of new beginnings, therefore the New Year is fixed for this season. Starting from April 14th, the Sun moves through each Rashi marking one solar month till Meena Rashi, marking the completion of one solar year in 365 days.
(The Tropical March equinox marks when the Northern Hemisphere starts to tilt toward the sun, which means longer, sunnier days. In the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox is called the vernal equinox, because it signals the beginning of spring (vernal means fresh or new like the spring). The September equinox is called the autumnal equinox, because it marks the first day of fall /autumn.
In the Amanta system, the lunar month in which the Mesha Sankramana occurs is designated the first lunar month, Chaitra mAsah. And the first day of the Shukla paksha of Chaitra mAsah is designated as the first day of the Lunar New Year (ChAndramANa Yugadhi). It preceeds the SauramANa Yugadhi, but due to the difference in days between solar and lunar years, the date of the ChAndramANa Yugadhi changes year on year. For this reason, SouramANa Samvatsara is referred to as the Sthirasamvatsara and ChandramANa Samvatsara as Asthira Samvatsara.
The solar month of Mesha overlaps with its lunar month Vaisakha, in Hindu lunisolar calendars. Regional calendars used in the Indian subcontinent have two aspects: lunar and solar. Lunar months begin with Chaitra and solar months start with Vaisakha Sankranti.
In regions such as Maharashtra which begin the official new year with the commencement of the lunar year, the solar year is marked by celebrating Vaisakha Sankranti. Conversely, regions starting the new year with Vaisakha Sankranti, give prominence to the start of the lunar year in Chaitra.
We know that it is rare to see a month long gap between the Pitr Paksha and Navratri as we have seen in this year, 2020. And this change in time also happens with Diwali and other festivals in some other years. So, let us see the reason behind these changes.
.In the luni-solar hindu calendar, while the length of a sidereal (12 months ) solar year is 365.25 days, the twelve lunar māsa add up to around 354 days, approximately 11 days short of a solar year. We are familiar with the leap year concept of the Gregorian calendar. Similarly, the lunar deficit of 11 days in the Indian calendar is offset approximately every 32.5 months / 2.7 years (32 months, 16 days and 8 ghadis to be precise), by repeating a month which is declared an Adhika Masa(extra month) and labelled with the same name as the lunar month succeeding it. Eg: This year the Adhika mAsah is called Adhika Ashwin and the following month will be Shuddh Aswin. The choice of this month is not random, but timed to sync back the Lunar calendar to the cycle of the seasons.
In practice, every lunar month witnesses only one sankramana. If a lunar month does not witness a sankramana (i.e. which starts and ends while the sun is traversing a single sign of the Zodiac then this month without transit is labelled the Adhika Masa and labeled with the same name as the lunar month succeeding it. Such a year has thirteen lunar months. This effectively synchronizes the lunar calendar with the solar calendar and ensures that a Mesha Sankramana happens in the following Chaitra masa.
The Hindu calendars adjust the mismatch in divasa and tithi, using a methodology similar to the solar and lunar months. Adhika māsa (month) is the first of two whereas an adhika tithi is the second of two.
Repeating a month causes a few problems like scheduling festivals, weddings or harvests. Assume we repeat a month say, June in a particular year. There would be confusion on which June to celebrate a birthday in or how to invite people for a wedding if both months are called June ! This issue is resolved in the Panchanga by declaring the first month as Shudha (pure, clean, regular, proper, also called Deva month) and the repeated month as Mala or Adhika (extra, unclean and inauspicious, also called Asura masa).
While some call this mAsah MalA / unclean, others consider it very auspicious. Either way, prayer, fasting, charity and purification rites are recommended for this month. Named after Lord Vishnu, the month is also called Purushottama mAsa and is dedicated to His worship.
The Hindu mathematicians who calculated the best way to adjust the lunar and solar years, over long periods of a yuga (era, tables calculating 1000s of years), determined that the best means to intercalate/ insert into the calendar the extra intercalary months was a 19-year cycle( the laghada yuga). This
Intercalation is generally adopted in the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 19th year of this cycle. Further, the complex rules rule out the repetition of Mārgasirsa, Pausha and Maagha lunar months. The historic Hindu texts are not consistent on these rules, with competing ideas flourishing in the Hindu culture.
The Hindu calendar makes further rare adjustments, over a cycle of centuries, where a certain month is considered kshaya month (dropped). This, for example, happened in the year 1 BCE, when there was no new moon between Makara samkranti and Kumbha samkranti, and the month of Pausha was dropped.
Nepali Calendar : Nepali calendar also called nepali patro is a traditional luni-solar calendar used in Nepal for cultural and religious purposes. Known as the Bikram Sambat Calendar, it is based on the hindu calendar system and serves as the official calendar of Nepal. The Nepali Calendar consists of 12 months, each with a varying number of days, changing from year to year, and ranging from 29 days to 32 days.
One of the unique features of the Nepali Calendar is that it is 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar. Nepali Calendar also known as Nepali Patro is the Bikram Sambat system which uses lunar months and solar sidereal year. The Nepalese new year falls on 1st Baishakh (mid of April). The months have a minimum of 28 (usually Mangshir/Poush) days and a maximum of 32 (usually Asar/Shrawan) days. Besides Nepal and India, Bikram Sambat Nepali Calendar is also used in other countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
King Chandragupta Vikramaditya, who was the Hindu king of Ujjain (currently in Rajasthan, India), started a new calendar and gave it his own name, Vikram. ‘Sambat’, which means ‘era’ in English, is used for any calendar system in Sanskrit. Thus, the calendar was named Vikram Sambat. With the development of the relationship between Vikramaditya and the Lichchhavi kings of Nepal through marriage, the calendar system was introduced to Nepal. Since then, it was used in Nepal by subsequent generations of kings for various purposes until it was replaced by Sakha Sambat during the Rana regime. However, the Ranas restored the Vikram Sambat Calendar in 1958, and since then, it has been used and known as the official Nepali Calendar.
It is also believed that around 58 BC, when the Vikram Sambat Calendar was started, there was no existence of King Chandragupta Vikramaditya in India. Therefore, the calendar may have been started and solely developed by the Lichchhavi kings of Nepal. This suggests that it was Mandev, the then king of Nepal, who started the Nepali Calendar.

Dates of Hindu Calender (Vikram Samvat) are called Tithi. Which are named as per condition of moon in a particular month. There are 15 Tithis in the waxing cycle of the moon also called as Shukla Paksha, and 15 tithis in the waning cycle of the moon also called as Krishna Paksha. In addition, the Dell was no longer upgradable and therefore stuck at Windows 7, and one thing I have learned over four decades in the high tech world, is that running mission-critical applications on obsolete hardware and operating systems is a sure route to tears, particularly since the latest version of Maxsea TimeZero (our preferred navigation software) is designed and optimized for Windows 10.
Also, we prefer to put the additional money that a ruggedized computer would cost into buying and maintaining a fully functioning spare (kept in a waterproof pelican case) that can be swapped out in minutes if the primary fails.
Therefore I zeroed in on the laptops aimed at the business market. As I compared machines from different manufacturers with the graphics and CPU power required, as well as SSD and plenty of memory, the price climbed to at least US$1000, and on up to US$1500.
By the way, there are also two apps that allow us Mac freaks to run Windows in a window under the Mac operating system. But, these virtual machine type applications add a level of complication, as well as overhead; and while they work extremely well, I prefer to keep things simple when dealing with a navigation computer. Also, Maxsea specifically advises against running TimeZero under a virtual machine. So Boot Camp it is.
This is a much bigger benefit than it might at first appear. Do you want some pop-up trying to sell you computer accessories coming up just as you are entering a tricky anchorage? Or worse still, some poorly-designed background program that crashes the whole computer at the worst possible moment?
This is a hard one to define, but there is no question in my mind that Apple products are, as a rule (yes I know there are exceptions), better designed and built and therefore more reliable than those from other manufacturers.
In addition, the same differentiation allows Apple longer product cycles, which in turn lets them concentrate on getting the design and manufacturing right in the first place. (Just look at the marine electronics industry to see the havoc that short product cycles and the pressure to constantly bring out something new wreaks.)
In addition, because the two operating systems are completely separate and only one is running at a given time, the other programs that we run on the computer under Mac OS can not possibly interfere or crash the navigation system.
This is in keeping with our thinking that navigation computers should be kept totally clean with no software installed that is not absolutely required to execute their primary function.
While I have not done an in-depth comparison of power usage, Apple have long been leaders in wringing maximum performance out of minimum watts. This is not just guesswork, since we are often running as many as three Macbooks (two Pros and an Air) on the boat doing AAC work, and the reduction in amp hours used over a day after we switched back from Windows machines was substantial.
The flip side of a clean Windows install is that we must do it ourselves. This is reasonably complex with quite a few steps. On the bright side, Apple has good documentation on the process and in addition you can call their support line, which is several cuts above that of most manufacturers, for help.
Obviously, if you are not a Mac user, this is not an option open to you and you will be faced with buying two Airs, but then if you are really going to have a hot spare, that will be the case no matter what computer you select.
Selecting a computer to run navigation software is complex subject with a million details to parse. And the above is by no means intended to be the last word. So what computer do you use for navigation and what was your reasoning when selecting it? Please leave a comment.
I was disappointed with the build quality for the price. From day 1 it creaked and groaned due to flex in the casing, within a month I was inside the thing after having figured out, and bought the special pentalobe screw driver to remove the rear cover. Bearing in mind I work on a ship and an Apple genius is not just around the corner. I fixed the creaking and groaning with an insulation tape gasket under the rear cover.
Good point. Also, I would never buy an older PC or a refurbished one for a mission critical application like Navigation. Just not worth the extra risk and aggravation for the price difference, at least to me. For example, as we both know, solid state memory, both RAM and SSD actually wear out with use, so I want to start with new.
We just kind of drifted into Maxsea via a business relationship we have with CMAP who used to own Nobeltec, so I have never done an evaluation of Maxsea against other options and probably never will since TimeZero seems to work well for us and I would rather go cruising and write about seamanship issues like docking and anchoring than evaluate software.
Sorry, after a working lifetime in high-tech, cutting edge marine electronics are just not my thing, particularly since most of this new stuff is seriously unreliable and much of it down right dangerous.
On ports. Every time Apple strips something the market has a melt down. Remember the hysteria when the stopped putting optical disk drives in their computers? But usually a year or so later stripping such stuff proves to be nothing but innovative forward thinking that makes their products better.
Also, in the comments to an earlier post I did on nav system interfaces the consensus was, if memory serves, that touch screens just did not work that well for navigation. I know I have tried it on a ipad and simply hated it, just not precise enough, at least for me.
John, Thank you for an informative and timely post. We are about to replace our HP laptop (similar concerns re age, etc.) and have been toying with an Air or Pro, or other Windows machine as that is what we have used extensively. We have two Garmin chartplotter said on board, as well as an iPad and two iPhones, all with Garmin BlueChart. We like the consistency of the charting. We have used Open CPN on our laptop for back up and coffee table planning, but not cruising. The laptop (whatever we get) will be backup. I assume, from your original description, that the MacBook Pro can be configured as you have the Air? We are leaning to a Pro because we use the laptop as an entertainment center on board. Thoughts? One problem with the Macs and many new laptops is that they are difficult to fix. Replacing the battery on my laptops is simple. Replacing the hard drive or accessing memory on either is a five minute task.
Disadvantages:* non-waterproof components, so more suited to a larger boat (or a location on a boat) where water is less likely to splash in (though one perhaps could find a waterproof display and mouse and put them in a wet location, connected via USB to a dry-located computer)* requires technical knowledge, skills and time, to buy, configure and install* no technical support number to call, so needs to be setup and tested before you leave
I just bought a factory refurbished Leveno X1 Carbon laptop with a SSD for $250. It came with a separate ThinkPad mini docking station that allows me to plug in multiple accessories like keyboards and large screens and disconnect and remove the laptop with a single plug.
I follow your arguments for running Windows on a Mac, having been doing this for years. It works perfect. What I dont follow you in, are the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. When I upgraded to the Maxsea Navigator V3., I first installed it on the backup laptop, and made a big mistake upgrading to Windows 10 at the same time.Luckily I didnt do that on the navigation computer on board, and it showed up there was no need. Maxsea V3. runs just perfect on our stationary computer running Windows 7.
Since security update on are of concern, Im guessing youre having Internet connection on your primary navigation computer. Well, we dont do that. Everything is downloaded and checked on an other laptop before the gribfile is transferred to the navigation computer via memory stick. This way were not in danger of getting any malware infection, and we dont need to run any kind of update, regarding firewall, antivirus or OS.
The two biggest things for me were overall screen brightness and ability to find reliable direct 12v DC charging solutions. The newer USB-C MacBook and especially the Pro (higher screen brightness) won the battle. I find black text on a white background readable in most direct or partial sun situations. Note, the versions without the touch bar have a more efficient CPUs.
Sounds like a good system and interesting about the speed comparison of Maxsea. I agree, in that it does not run that much faster on a fully tricked out Macbook Pro than the Air. That said, I would not go too far down the graphics power curve in case the computer got overwhelmed at just the wrong moment. For example I have noticed that TimeZero can get a little hesitant if adding a complex new route while navigating. Given that, the spec of the Air above is as low as I would want to go.
Also, in recent years I have had no problems with USB hubs, at least as long as they are externally powered and so I regard that as a solved problem. Also W10 seems a lot better at connecting and staying connected to USB devices than 7 was.
We are in the Strait of Belle Isle and so I have had internet, but we are now heading out of cell phone coverage again, probably for a week or so, so I will not be present in the comments for a while.
I replaced my ancient laptop earlier this year with a smart new Windows 10 HP reversible touchscreen laptop. I run Seapro for charting and AIS. My thought was that I would use it in tablet mode to be more compact.
As to the Windows 10 lock down problem, I would go with the solution Henric and I both use which is to not connect it to the internet much.
